So I did. I am now the proud owner of a 1996 Suzuki X90 with a blown head gasket and an automagic transmission. It runs and drives too!..... a very short distance..... very badly..... sort of..... I bought it for $1 as an early Valentine’s Day present for my Girlfriend from an X90 enthusiast who wanted to see it go to someone who would love it as much as she did and get it running again.
The most 1990s photo ever
She is totally in love with this car, she’s always wanted one
Now... anybody got a lead on a running Suzuki 1.6L 16v inline 4 cylinder from an x90 or a tracker/sidekick?

Shouldn’t be too hard to source from a self service junkyard as most Trackers end up there due to bad Autotragic transmissions.

That is so 90s it hurts. The only way it could be more 90s is if you had some teal graphics on the side. Looks great.

I like that. A lot. That purple is groovy

>$1 car
I did it better.

You should be able to find doner car on Craigslist for an engine.

This is how opposite lock legends are born. Congratulations, this is going to be a fun project.

Needs yellow/teal decals on the side

That’s awesome, haha.
We gotta see the rest of that interior!

Gib.

Shut it down, we’ve reached peak Oppo

Awesome! You used to see one of them in black running around here, but I’ve not seen it in ages...always sortof liked them though in their ‘underdog, most people forget them’ sort of way. Would the engine from an Esteem work somehow with a trans swap? (I know the Esteem is FWD and the X90 is RWD).
Needs a manual swap as they are more reliable than Suzuki’s auto transmissions...is the engine, itself, damaged from the blown gasket, or does it just need a gasket repair?

My god it’s even purple, PURPLE!!! #faints#

Just in case:
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:31 |
|
At first I thought it would but the esteem doesn’t have a distributor gear on the camshaft
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:32 |

ooooo an X90! Never seen one in purple before. What an awesome color. Suzuki had some awesome colors in the 90s
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:33 |

Yes! Needs Jazz Solo stripes.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:33 |

I’ve always liked these.

There’s no such thing as better in the realm of $1 cars
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:38 |
|
You know what to do.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:40 |
|
Yes there is, it made it several hundred miles on it’s own power. This one did not.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:47 |
|
And on the engine, I don’t know. It overheated so I’m expecting to have to Mill the head and the block if I were to do a new gasket. A new engine seems easier and cheaper

BAD ASS!
i think the x90 is a hidden treasure of quirkiness
i demand a drive once running :)
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:55 |

Girlfriend says maybe
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:56 |
|
I don’t know what your budget is, but I bet you could find engine/trans together on eBay.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 15:57 |
|
The thing is; she wants an automatic. And the transmission actually shifts okay
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:01 |
|
hmmm....fine, I demand a drive before its fixed then :D
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:01 |
|
If you can manage that, more power to ya

[notices Ranger is doing the pulling]
[doesn’t see the cherokee]
[sees crazy Suzuki]
THIS IS ALL EXCELLENT NEWS THAT IS GOOD

burnouts with smoke pouring from the engine rather than the tyres
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:05 |

So Purple!
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:05 |

Yep, The ranger runs again. The Cherokee is still for sale and I still have it (a lot of interest in it, not a lot of biting though).
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:18 |

Was that 1.6 in the Esteem too? I wonder if the Esteem’s 1.8 would fit.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:25 |
|
The 1.6 was in the esteem too, but the esteem 1.6 doesn’t have a distributor gear on the cam, so I’m 90% sure it won’t work with the x90 ecu
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:40 |
|
The only thing rarer than an X90 is an X90 enthusiast.
Awesome
![]() 01/22/2017 at 16:50 |
|
No LS swap? Lol
I’d buy it for $1 too
![]() 01/22/2017 at 17:06 |
|
That’s too bad. The 1.8 is no fire-breather, but it did have more power than the slowish 1.6.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 17:19 |

1. Pull a 2.3 liter 4 cyl out of a fox body
2. Add an eBay turbo
3. ???
4. FWD burnouts
![]() 01/22/2017 at 17:38 |
|
That is a lot of purple.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 19:15 |
|
Then there ya’ have it.
![]() 01/22/2017 at 19:22 |
|
Its not fwd, its RWD/4wd
![]() 01/22/2017 at 19:50 |
|
Even better
![]() 01/22/2017 at 20:22 |
|
I’m surprised no one has commented on the front plate.
![]() 01/23/2017 at 05:02 |
|
LS swap?
![]() 01/23/2017 at 08:35 |
|
I’m with her, I have an irrational and unmanly love for the cuteness that is the X90 every time I see one.
![]() 01/23/2017 at 13:52 |
|
What is even worse is the Aerio 2.0L easily swaps into an Esteem in place of the 1.8L, so if the 1.8L worked the 2.0L would have been even better.
![]() 01/23/2017 at 14:16 |
|
Ah, that’s unfortunate. That 2.0 might actually make the X90 a spry little beast.
